Thoughts on the final week
Hard to believe it’s here already, isn’t it? I still remember debating whether or not I was going to find a job with a primary campaign, doesn’t even seem like it was that long ago.
Well, the last week of the current cycle of the eternal election is now upon us, and I thought I’d chime in with some musings (and perhaps a rant) as we come to the close.
1) I still do not...

Buffett: Buy American. I am.
GREAT piece in the Op-Ed Section of the New York Times today.
Money Quote:
Let me be clear on one point: I can’t predict the short-term movements of the stock market. I haven’t the faintest idea as to whether stocks will be higher or lower a month — or a year — from now. What is likely, however, is that the market will move higher, perhaps substantially so, well before either sentiment or the...

Poll Says McCain Hurts His Bid by Using Attacks
This is the cover story in the New York Times today.
Money Quote:
“Voters who said their opinions of Mr. Obama had changed recently were twice as likely to say they had grown more favorable as to say they had worsened. And voters who said that their views of Mr. McCain had changed were three times more likely to say that they had...
Obama Tax Calculator
This is a nifty little toy.
The Obama campaign has put together a calculator that shows how much you will save with his tax plan vs. McCain’s tax plan. I haven’t checked the math behind it to see if it really matches McCain’s current proposals, but it’s still pretty darned nifty.
(Of course, there’s no way any of this is going to be affordable any time soon,...
Is it really that bad to not remember every single person you may have gone out with in High School? (I’m 26, btw, not like a recent high school grad).
re: Fuel Efficiency of Americans
A recent study found the average American walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found Americans drink, on the average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon.

comments, ugh
Okay, so there is one fatal flaw with the comments:
The link to comments is obscured by the title of any post. The link is still there, it’s just not at all visible.
Please feel free to continue using the comments until I figure this out, and my apologies to the legions of fans I’m sure have just been dying to leave reams of praise.
March 22, 2007
(a letter from Senator Barack Obama, dated March 22, 2007. Eerily prescient.)
Dear Chairman Bernanke and Secretary Paulson,
There is grave concern in low-income communities about a potential coming wave of foreclosures. Because regulators are partly responsible for creating the environment that is leading to rising rates of home foreclosure in the subprime mortgage market, I urge you...
Krugman's analysis
Okay, this is slightly on the wonkish side, but rather than try and summarize a brilliant 10 page essay, I thought I’d link to it, and then use my handy-dandy new comments feature to allow people to ask me any clarifying questions. Personally I think it blows what I’ve been working on out of the water.
So, if you have a half hour or so and want to feel initially stupid but then...
comments!
Well, I spent some time today and figured out why the code for my theme wouldn’t let me embed Disqus comments properly, and I’m pleased to say I have found the solution! So, please feel free to comment, discuss, etc., etc.

House votes to pass. Republicans turn out to be full of shit, just needed more time for panic to set in and for earmarks to be added. Of course.
In other news, the sky might have finally stopped falling just a teensy-weensy bit. I will most likely finish a summary of the once 3 page, now 450 page bailout rescue plan this weekend and post it for everyone. I can almost guarantee that I will be...

A Beginner's Guide to the Bailout
….is coming soon.
Sorry this is taking so long, but the bailout details keep changing, and I can’t decide if I should include the politicking going on or save that for a separate explanation. Regardless, I hope to post something by the end of the week, as I know a couple of my friends really want one.
A few quick points people should keep in mind, though:
1) NOT a bailout. This...
A frail 80-year-old mother is celebrating her birthday and her three sons each give her a present. Harry gives her a new house. Harvey gives her a new car and driver. And Bernie gives her a huge parrot that can recite the entire Torah. A week later, she calls her three sons together and says: “Harry, thanks for the nice house, but I only live in one room. Harvey, thanks for the nice car, but I...
